Sedation Dentistry in Michigan City, IN

Having dental anxiety is quite common. Many patients with dental anxiety avoid going to the dentist all together and, unfortunately, let their dental problems exacerbate. This apprehension can be managed easily with sedation dentistry.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to dental procedures done while administering a sedative medication to help the patient relax and feel more comfortable. There are four levels of sedation:

  1. Minimal sedation: In this stage the patient is awake but in a very relaxed state. The patient responds normally to verbal commands.
  2. Moderate sedation: Often referred to as conscious sedation, the patient can still respond purposefully to verbal stimulation. Many patients have no memory of the procedure at this level.
  3. Deep sedation: This stage is deeper than moderate and is apparent by the patient only responding to repeated painful stimulation.
  4. General anesthesia: The deepest level of sedation, typically in a hospital or outpatient surgery setting.

Types of sedation dentistry

Oral sedation

Oral sedation involves administering an oral sedative medication which reduces anxiety. Usually, these medications are taken an hour before the procedure. Oral sedation is a commonly preferred option due to its simplicity and cost. It is often recommended for mildly anxious patients.

IV sedation

IV sedation is often recommended for patients with any level of dental anxiety, but commonly for the moderate to severely anxious. While some patients may fall asleep or have no memory of their procedure, it’s more common to be awake but very relaxed. IV sedation is an extremely safe method for managing dental anxiety. An IV is started and medications can be administered directly unlike taking oral sedatives. The patient’s progress with the medication is immediately recognized and doses can be given as needed throughout the procedure.
